Douglas McKay - Honorary Member - Paul Harris Fellowship

Chairman Angus presented our very own Douglas with an Honorary Membership and a Paul Harris Fellowship. The presentation speech is printed below:

Douglas C McKay M.A.

Our longest serving member Douglas has advised us of his intention to retire from Rotary at the end of the current year.

Douglas’ service with the Club began 32 years ago in 1976. From 1978 to 1981 he served as Honorary Secretary and he was Club President in 1985-86 when the Club organised a Golfing Event on the Links and unveiled the cairn and plaques to mark Leith’s golfing history.  Since then he has served regularly as both convenor and member on several committees. Most recently he served as House Convenor keeping our attendance records up to date and as a member of Council giving valued advice from his long experience.  The Club’s highest recognition of a retiring member with such distinguished service is to bestow Honorary Membership on that person. So Douglas becomes an honorary member of Leith Club with effect from next week, welcome to attend any of our meetings and functions but without obligation.

Other than this exemplary Rotary service, Douglas has been a community leader in Leith for an even greater length of time – It was in 1971 that he came from being Headmaster of Alva Academy to be Rector of Leith Academy; after his retiral from academic duty he represented Merchiston Ward on Edinburgh city council for some 6 years, during which time he served at the 1986 Commonwealth Games as accreditation officer for thousands of athletes and volunteers; he has served as Chairman of Port of Leith Housing Association not to mention Abbeyfield and Link too; and also Chairman of the Scotch Malt Whisky Society.

Your Council has decided that the Club should recognise Douglas’ service to Rotary and the greater Leith community by making him a Paul Harris Fellow, the highest honour that Rotary can bestow and one which the Leith club awards very rarely.

Douglas it is my great pleasure to give you this Paul Harris medallion and certificate on behalf of Rotary International and all Leith Club members.

“Explosive Bangers & Mash”

Text Box: Members and Friends of Leith Rotary gathered at the Starbank Inn on Guy Fawkes Night to enjoy Crombie’s Sausages and some excellent beer but more importantly to raise some funds to send a Shelterbox to the recent disaster areas in the Pacific which have been hit by earthquakes and tsunamis.
The evening raised £340 and the Club agreed to make this up to £490, which is the cost of one Shelterbox. This will provide a home together with blankets, cooking equipment, a water purification system and other essentials for the survival for 10 people.
Our thanks go to Friend of Rotary, Sandy Crombie, for providing the fantastic sausages, which were all appropriately named, and to the Starbank Inn for providing the facilities and the mash.
