What is Rotary?

Rotary International is an organisation whose members comprise Rotary Clubs located around the world. The members of Rotary Clubs, known as Rotarians, are business and professional leaders who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, while helping build goodwill and peace in the world. Their motto is "Service above Self".

The first club was founded in USA in 1905 by Paul P. Harris, a Chicago attorney, to foster the "ideal of service" as a basis of enterprise. The name Rotary came about because originally meetings were to be held in rotation in members' offices.

Rotary International has over 1 million members in 30,000 clubs in 163 countries. In Great Britain and Ireland there are 60,000 Rotarians in 1,816 Clubs. Rotary shares when it undertakes to address the needs of many in this world through its emphasis on Water, Health, Hunger and Literacy. Rotary distributes over £ 50 million each year to worthy and needy causes throughout the world.

About Leith Rotary

Leith Rotary Club  was founded in 1952 with the inaugural meeting being held in the Royal British Hotel on Thursday 17th April. We currently have around 35 members.

Our weekly meetings are a springboard for a host of activities, including a number of projects in the local community, and various social and sporting events (curling and golf in particular).

A few recent projects include:

  • Driving with Fairshare to deliver food from supermarkets to agencies assisting the homeless.

  • Organising the Willie Merrilees Christmas Party for nearly 500 Leith Senior Citizens with donations from local businesses.

  • Co-ordinating with local schools to fill shoe boxes with toys, food and household goods for families in Eastern Europe.

  • Contributing monies to help provide a Well to give clean water for a Girl's School in Zambia.

  • Providing donations to more than a dozen local charities from funds raised by the Club.

All these projects and many more are fun to get involved with and do make a difference.
